Interview with the producer     SOBAKA.RU #83, december 2007

If you see a band looking and playing perfectly at a private party lay a bet that it is one of Mercury Planet Entertainment Group bands. Besides Pilotage the producer formed some more bands playing all the significant kinds of music. Mercury Planet plays Disco and Acid Jazz, Sun Shine — Russian and World Pop music, Sammy Davis Junior — both coasts r’n’b, Sunset — Jazz and Lounge, Love Me Tender — Rock’n’Roll Classics.

What do you love most in your life?

Dmitri Milanov
There’s nothing more interesting than reading. Books are a source of inspiration and pleasure. Stronger than the cinema or theatre. It can be compared only to music.

What about your profession, was it your own choice?

D. M.
My mother had died before I succeeded. I remember that in my boyhood days, when I was about ten we were something like a gang. Usually we played football or walked around some building area. My friends came for me but my mother didn’t let me go with them. I was really angry at her. I couldn’t simply understand. She stood out my lashing and that was the way she saved my life. You know…lots of those boys are not alive. She didn’t want me to hang around the streets far into the night but she wanted me to do my homework and prepare for my school. And exactly because of that I’m here talking to you.

Nowadays young people prefere to listen to songs in English.what is the greatest difference between songs in English and Russian?

D. M.
Many Russian songs are sad. But sadness is common in our life and instead of denying or being afraid of it you can simply take it as it goes, just love it, for example driving a favorable car.

What is music to you?

D. M.
Somebody said that life is an artful following our instincts. Sounds good. Thus we have music, lyric verse and bad writing novels…

Have you changed at the years go by?

D. M.
I was very impatient. Having entered the Department of Pop Singing at Mussorgsky Music College I behaved like the majority of us did as if there were not any good vocalists before we appeared. Any idea had to be sprung to life immediately. Waiting just drove me crazy. Often I think about Sammy Davis Jr. life. Buddy Rich, a famous drummer, with the band warmed up before Davis concert. At that time Buddy was about 70 years old. And in the middle of a half-hour set he drumed solo for about 5 minutes. While he was playing people sprang and screamed with delight. And then Sam came out and said: «Could you see how this guy drums? And after all it is good not to give up and follow your way». The man who digs in toes one day will be named as a wiseman.

Such persistence is usually proper for sportsmen.

D. M.
Sport is a wonderful metaphor of our life. Out of all the kinds I’ve ever done the best example is tennis (Roger Federer), English football («Arsenal») and professional box (Shane Mosley). I wish there was an alternative to «NTV+». Their commentators are awful I should say. It doesn’t matter whether you have some arguments and the thing that you can prove they work because in any case they’ll put foot down, they just think other way and there’s no way to convince them. But still what a pleasure to watch and listen to without any commentators.

What is your life policy?

D. M.
The most important thing is to remember that there are some things that are under your control and things you’d never be able to change. You shouldn’t wish something heavily. Just do your work and will get what you deserve.

You spent your childhood in Leningrad…

D. M.
My parents splitted up when I was a little boy. I was the only child in my family and we lived in a block on Karbysheva street, «Ploshad Mugestva» metro station. My mother was constantly working and I was left on my own devicces. The first time I stood on stage was at primary school, I was acting. The school was situated on Bolotnaya street. This place was popularly named as «Jewish beggarhood district». I should say that it was a wonderful time. I was fortunate in having my teachers. At first when I sang in children’s choir, then at music school. We played and sang almost all the songs of «The Beatles». Then at Mussorgsky Music College my teacher was great Ludmila Kagirovna Gadgieva, I remember she told me when I was surprised by singing really top notes: «That is your voice». The only two places where I wouldn’t stand being there are karaoke and the cinema with the full Russia translation of a film. These places are the only places where you’d suffer from your own knowledge and experience.

What is the distinctive feature of music community in Saint-Petersburg?

D. M.
In Saint-Petersburg everything is different, far more serious. Here people don’t look ahead. Today is like the last day and the most important thing is what you’d leave behind. Money is not the most important thing here, it’s not the aim I mean. Make some money then splash it out is not the way here. None of us try to change the world with the art but I’m sure that we can make life much better. A very talanted musician being 50-year-old man looks like a boy. I remember that having heard this he said: «Time stops when we play». And he plays for all his life.

What a singer should be for you to set eyes on her?

D. M.
People like a singer who sings well, can tell a story. The rest is my business. Punctuality is essential I think. If you come on time everything comes along. Could you remember the words from «Hamlet»: «…so, oft it chances in particular men. It takes from our achievements, though perform’d at height, the pith and marrow of our attribute». I see that really often.

What does being happy mean to you?

D. M.
The man who knew no end of life, laugh and love was happy. There is only one difference between our life and a long dinner — at dinner the dessert is prepared for later.
